Law and Development Post the Pandemic (2023)
The Law and Development Institute and the Centre for Asian Legal Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS) co-hosted the 2023 Law and Development Conference in Singapore. Thirty-two leading and emerging scholars and experts from Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America, and Africa presented papers on key topics including legal remedies for the pandemic-caused economic disruptions; the Pandemic, discrimination, and the right to development; the pandemic and developing countries: legal and institutional approaches; technological Innovations at the time of the pandemic and the law; the pandemic-induced social changes and the law; and education, the pandemic, and rising issues.
Law and Development in High Income Countries (2021)
The Law and Development Institute and Bucerius Law School co-hosted the 2021 Law and Development Conference online. Twenty-one leading and emerging scholars and experts from North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia presented papers on key topics including the role of state, law, and institutions for economic development; poverty and inequality in high income countries and the role of law; law and social development: justice, corruption, and social responsibility; and international trade law, WTO, and rising issues.
Law and Development: From the Islamic Perspective (2019)
The Law and Development Institute and the University of Dubai College of Law co-hosted the 2019 Law and Development Conference in Dubai, UAE in collaboration with the Global Forum on Law, Justice, and Development facilitated by the World Bank. Twenty-seven leading and emerging scholars and experts from the Middle East, North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, East and Southeast Asia, and Latin America presented papers on key topics including the role of law and institutions for development in the Islamic world, Islamic perspective in law and development, “law” as a bridge between the Islamic and non-Islamic worlds for development, arbitration and development, and economic crimes in the context of development. Over one hundred scholars, lawyers, government officials, business leaders, and students registered to attend the conference.
Law and Development: Theory and Practice (2018)
The Law and Development Institute, Humboldt University Faculty of Law, and Walter de Gruyter GmbH co-hosted the ninth annual law and development conference in Berlin, Germany, commemorating the tenth anniversary of Law and Development Review (LDR), currently the only peer-reviewed academic journal in existence devoted to law and development studies. Sixteen leading scholars from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America presented papers on key topics in law and development including the current status of law and development scholarship, the General Theory of Law and Development and its applications, enhancement and protection of economic and social interests, and development governance and the role of development agencies in the development process.
Law and Development: From the African Perspective (2017)
The Law and Development Institute and the Centre for Comparative Law in Africa (CCLA), the University of Cape Town, co-hosted the eighth annual law and development conference in Cape Town, South Africa. Thirty-seven leading scholars and experts from Africa, North America, Asia, and Europe presented papers over two days on essential law and development topics relevant to Africa, such as legal pluralism and effective governance for development in Africa; law and industrial promotion in Africa; law and natural resources development in Africa; intellectual property rights and development; law, poverty alleviation, and sustainable development; and human rights and conservation.
Law and Development: From the Global South Perspectives (2016)
The Law and Development Institute, University Austral, and the Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean, Inter-America Development Bank (IDB-INTAL) co-hosted the seventh annual law and development conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Conference featured high-level academic presentations on key topics in law and development, such as developmental state, development and international trade, development and environment, development and corruption, and the rule of law. Twenty-five leading scholars and experts from South and North Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe presented papers over two days. Representatives from the IDB and the World Bank also discussed key development projects relevant to the conference topics.
New Directions for Law and Development Studies (2015)
The Law and Development Institute and Payson Center for International Development, Tulane University co-hosted the LDI’s sixth annual conference in New Orleans, USA. Twenty-one distinguished speakers from North and South Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia presented papers on the current status of law and development studies, the necessity for new directions, including new analytical frameworks and institutional approaches, and the renewed interest in “developmental states”. Issues of child labor, controversies of property rights, and the need for global financial stability were also discussed.
Law, Institution, and Development (2014)
The Law and Development Institute hosted its fifth annual conference in Manchester, U.K. Several senior and rising scholars from Americas, Europe, and Asia gave presentations on current issues on law, institution, and development as well as rising issues on the legal origins theory, international fiscal law and development, and law and civil stability.
Law and Development Implications of International Land Acquisitions (2013)
The Law and Development Institute and Kyoto University Graduate School of Environmental Studies co-hosted the LDI’s fourth annual law and development conference in Kyoto, Japan. Twenty leading and rising scholars from a number of developed and developing countries, including United States, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Italy, Ethiopia, Uganda, Poland, Cambodia, and India, made presentations on the law and development issues arising from international land acquisitions.
New Issues in Law and Development: From East Asian Practice (2012)
The Law and Development Institute, in conjunction with Ewha Womans University School of Law, hosted its third annual conference in Seoul, Korea. Presentations were made on the issues of developmental state, law and economic development in Korea, development of legislative theory and practice in Korea and Taiwan, development issues in WTO negotiations, development of laws to support regional economy and consumer interests.
Law and Development at the Microlevel: From Microtrade to Current Issues in Law and Development (2011)
The Law and Development Institute, in conjunction with Seattle University School of Law, held its second annual conference in Seattle, USA. Seventeen leading speakers from seven countries, including U.S.A., Canada, Japan, Australia, Thailand, United Kingdom, and India, presented key issues on international trade, investment and finance, and least-developed countries from the perspective of law and development.
Law and Development Institute Inaugural Conference: Future of Law and Development Studies, International Trade Law and Developing Countries (2010)
The Law and Development Institute hosted the Inaugural Conference in Sydney, Australia. The Conference featured high profile presentations by twelve leading scholars and professionals from several countries, including United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Israel. Over one hundred scholars, lawyers, diplomats, government officials, and business leaders attended the conference, and the Chief Justice of New South Wales gave a conglatulatory speech at the conference.
