Call for Papers: 2018 Law and Development Conference
Law and Development: Theory and Practice

Berlin, Germany, July 6, 2018

Jointly organized by

The Law and Development Institute
Humboldt University Faculty of Law,
and Walter de Gruyter GmbH

Rationale and purpose of the conference

This conference, co-hosted by Humboldt University Faculty of Law, Walter de Gruyter GmbH, and the Law and Development Institute, commemorates the tenth anniversary of Law and Development Review (LDR), currently the only peer-reviewed academic journal in existence devoted to law and development studies.

Law and development studies are at an important juncture. Although scholarship in law and development, which explores the relationship between law and social and economic progress, has evolved over the last four decades, this area of inquiry remains unfamiliar to many legal scholars, lawyers, and policy makers. Scholars have not yet been able to establish law and development as a robust and coherent academic field by developing a theory that systematically explains the interrelationship between law and development. This conference will explore possibilities for new breakthrough by examining current studies and considering new approaches on the following sub-topics:

Theoretical Frameworks for Law and Development (e.g. a recent work attempting to develop a general theory: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2951317)
Law Reform/The Rule of Law Projects – Are They Effective for Development?
Feasibility of the Analytical Law and Development Model (ADM, see https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2839943)
Critique of the Present Practice and Suggestion for Future Approaches
Institutional Approaches to Law and Development

Papers will be selected by blind peer-review. We ask all interested speakers to submit one-page paper abstracts by January 1, 2018.
